The Wedding Day Is Many Peoples' Initial Focus, But The Wedding Rehearsal Dinner Can Be Special, Too

There are countless arrangements, expenses and anxieties that go hand in hand with planning a wedding day. If couples aren't mindful they can get so involved with planning the event and attempting to get all the details right that there is little time to enjoy the experience. When my niece was planning her wedding ceremony she had three bridal showers to be at, reception plans to finalize and was endeavoring to nail down a venue for the rehearsal dinner. The third shower was located at my home. I'm her godmother so I had wanted to do something really special for her. Several days before the bridal shower we talked on the phone. She sounded very anxious. She and her fiance were also having problems selecting the best wedding songs for the nuptials. I recommended that she come the night before the wedding shower and stay overnight and we would kick back and I would help her make a list of what still had to be done prior to the wedding ceremony. She thought this sounded like a great plan.

I did the vast majority of the preparations for the shower prior to my niece getting there so that we could concentrate on her to do list. She said that the rehearsal dinner was her main stress because the place they had reserved had double booked, so they needed to locate a new location. We started by working on finding the best wedding songs for the wedding day so we could get one stress out of the way thereby giving a good feeling that the other would be handled as well. As I predicted finding the best wedding songs was just a matter of searching the internet, listening to samples, ordering and that was that. Now to tackle the rehearsal dinner.

The rehearsal dinner is historically done by the groom's family; the truth is some people refer to the occasion as the groom's dinner. My niece's fiance is from out of state so his family is prepared to pay for the rehearsal dinner, but they're not able to help with making the plans. My niece had contacted the restaurant where the wedding reception will be located, but the only available space was the section where the wedding reception would be held. My niece said that the plan was to decorate the reception area prior to going to the church for the rehearsal.

We called two neighboring restaurants to see if they could host the rehearsal dinner. Both had other events planned. Her fiance's mom and dad are divorced, also both have remarried. This meant that there were extra people to incorporate in the rehearsal dinner. This was also adding to her anxiety because she was trying to suss out the etiquette for seating. She had the seating chart arranged for the wedding day, but not knowing the place the rehearsal dinner would be happening limited her capability to arrange a chart.

I asked my niece if she had called the church to find out if the fellowship area would be open. Everyone could just circulate and have a light catered meal. This would be quite a bit less formal and would be easy to plan. The fellowship area was available that day. We called two delis and ordered catering. My niece called her fiance and told him the new plans for the rehearsal dinner. He thought this sounded fantastic. He would make preparations to have a friend of his tend bar and would set up for the drinks.

The rehearsal dinner was a pleasant relaxed evening. The guests were able to mingle and socialize and the bride and groom did not feel pressured to sit in one spot while everybody ordered their food and had it served. With having a buffet line the atmosphere was very casual and the out of town guests did not have to try to find another location in an area that they weren't familiar with.
